John S. Davis, CFP
President

Our President and Chief Investment Officer is a NAPFA-registered financial advisor. He has been helping people with their financial concerns since 1991. He is founder and principal of Mentor Capital Management Inc., a registered investment advisory firm. Prior to establishing the firm, he enjoyed a successful financial planning career with American Express Co.
John previously spent 14 years as a journalist, first as a reporter and editor, then as editor in chief of a group of newspapers in suburban Chicago.
He has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri and has completed the two-year professional education program of the College for Financial Planning, Denver, Colo. He is licensed as a Certified Financial Planner and Investment Advisory Firm Principal. He formerly was licensed as a Registered Representative of the NASD and as an Illinois Insurance Producer.
John is a fourth-generation resident of Elmhurst, Ill. An avid outdoorsman, he also enjoys writing, traveling and spending time with his family and his dogs. He has been an AYSO soccer referee for eight years, a member of the Elmhurst College Planned Giving Committee since 2001 and has held leadership positions with the Elmhurst YMCA Board of Trustees, the Elmhurst Rotary Club, Bethel United Church of Christ and the Edison School PTA.
Thomas B. Adams, CPA
Financial Planner

Tom is a NAPFA-registered financial advisor and is also registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as an Investment Advisor Representative. His clients include people of all ages and stages of life, and he also focuses on helping single women deal with the unique financial planning and investment issues they face. He is in the process of completing the College for Financial Planning's Certified Financial Planner (CFP) program.
Tom belongs to several professional organizations; in addition to being a member of the American Institute of CPAs, he serves on the Board of Directors for both the Financial Planning Association of Illinois and the DuPage County Estate Planning Council.
A CPA for over 20 years, Tom graduated with high honors from the University of Alabama, earning a B.S. in accounting. Prior to joining Mentor Capital, he held a variety of accounting and financial positions in the Atlanta and Chicago areas with companies such as Ernst & Young, Georgia-Pacific and Aon.
A sometimes running enthusiast, Tom has completed three marathons but now limits his runs to shorter distances. He enjoys volunteering his time in the community, currently serving on the Board of Directors for Hinsdale Community Service and in a fundraising role for the Southwest Suburban Center on Aging.
Tom also enjoys watching sports and follows Southeastern Conference football and basketball, despite living in Big Ten country.
Daniel B. Carey, CFP
Certified Financial Planner

Daniel B. Carey, CFP, joined the team at Mentor Capital Management Inc. in August of 2007.He formerly was employed with Clune & Associates, a financial advisory firm in Chicago, where he worked since June 2000.
Daniel is registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as an Investment Advisor Representative. He completed the College for Financial Planning Program to gain his CFP distinction in March of 2004. Aside from providing many financial advisory services, Daniel is also licensed as an Illinois insurance producer in the areas of Life, Health, Disability and Long Term Care.
A graduate of The University of Notre Dame, Daniel earned his degree in Finance and Computer Applications. He was also a member of the Fighting Irish Football Team where he filled the position of Defensive Lineman and Long Snapper.
Outside of the financial world, Daniel is an active member of the Notre Dame Club of Chicago and the Hamburg Athletic Association. He is an avid sports fan who enjoys attending football games at his alma mater and many baseball games in his hometown, on the Southside of Chicago.He also enjoys spending time volunteering for his favorite charities: Misericordia and the Special Olympics.
Tammy M. Prim
Administrative Assistant
Office manager, database administrator, systems supervisor, receptionist - Tammy fills many important functions with Mentor Capital. She keeps the office running smoothly so that the financial planners can focus on serving their clients.
Prior to joining the organization in 2002, she worked for The Martin-Brower Co. for 14 years, first as an administrative supervisor, then as a word processing and systems engineering analyst, then as the company’s print graphics coordinator. In addition to her work with Mentor Capital, she owns a successful embroidery business, Threads of Distinction. She lives in Lombard, Ill., with her son, dog and cats.
